Every year, Germany comes alive with the vibrant spirit of Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest, the world’s largest beer festival, is a celebration of Bavarian culture, tradition, and, of course, beer. Held annually in late September, despite its name, and extended for 16-18 days, this iconic event has become synonymous with German culture and hospitality. Here’s a closer look at the event.
Beer, Beer, and More Beer
The heart of Oktoberfest is undoubtedly beer. Munich’s top breweries brew special Märzen beer for the occasion. These rich and flavorful lagers are enjoyed in large, dimpled glass mugs called “steins.”
But Oktoberfest isn’t just about beer. Traditional Bavarian cuisine pairs perfectly with beer, offering mouthwatering sausages, roasted chicken, pretzels, sauerkraut, schnitzel, and delectable desserts like apple strudel.
Traditional Clothing
The festival’s vibrant atmosphere is amplified by the traditional clothing worn by many attendees. Men wear “lederhosen,” leather shorts often accompanied by suspenders, while women wear “dirndls,” elaborate dresses with aprons.
Attractions and Entertainment
The festival takes place in a vast amusement park with thrilling rides, sideshows, and games. Cultural exhibitions and parades featuring traditional costumes and horse-drawn beer wagons are also part of the festivities. Spectacular firework displays light up the Munich sky on selected evenings.

What an extraordinary night it was when we attended Oktoberfest in Hanoi! This annual celebration, coordinated by the German Business Association (GBA) in Vietnam and the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Vietnam (AHK Vietnam), welcomes friends from all corners of the world in Hanoi and brings intense joy and unforgettable experiences.
For the first time in Hanoi, we found ourselves dancing, eating, and singing along to traditional German songs. The vibrant atmosphere and lively music fulfilled the feelings of all. The highlight of the night was the taste of authentic German sausages and famous pretzels, paired perfectly with fresh craft beer from Germany.
But Oktoberfest is not just about celebrating German culture or only a normal festival; it is about bringing people together. We were excited to meet not only Germans but also friendly friends from Japan, Korea, and various other countries. We all harmonized together in dancing and sharing the unique experience of this special occasion as if there were no boundaries.
